Is Barack Obama Muslim?

An email is sent as chainmail claiming Barack Obama is a muslim.

From the email:
“Probable Democrat presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHIEST from Wichita, Kansas. ”

The article dicusses several variations and goes on with awnsering some very good questions. Too bad no source is given for their awnsers.

The Official Biography of Barack Obama makes almost no mention of his religion. At the end it simply states: “His wife, Michelle, and his two daughters, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6, live on Chicago’s South Side where they attend Trinity United Church of Christ.”. So the answer to this site’s question can simply be put as ‘no’.

However, a lot of questions have raised during his run for the democratic nomination because of who his father was and where he grew up. His father was born in Kenya which is partly Muslim (only 10% according to The CIA World Factbook - Kenya). As a child he did live in Indonesia (86.1% Muslim according to The CIA World Factbook - Indonesia).

The biography makes no mention what religion he practiced there.
